Default 98 sportster hard to shift

my wifes new 98 sportster 883 is hard as hell to shift and next to impossible to get into neutral unless you are moving... any ideas on what is causing this or solutions? I just installed an easy pull clutch mechanism... could I have done something to make it worse?
Thanks

You might check the tension on the clutch cable. There should be about 1/8" inch of play if you pull on the cable up next to the lever.
