You're not that big. I've had everything, including the big pigs and settled back down to my 2 1200 Sportys. They're easy to ride, simple to maintain and powerful as hell, and I never worry about them falling over, since the center of gravity is so low.

I used to ride a 500cc metric 15+ years ago and had to give it up for lack of $$. Now that I'm middle-aged and established, I want to get back into riding. Naturally, I'm looking at a Harley. Even though I've ridden before, I want to approach this as if I haven't, so I thought I'd go with a Sportster, since they appear to be easier to handle for a "novice".

Now the big question. I am not a small guy... 6 feet tall and run about 240 pounds. Is a Sportster going to be too small for me? I'm not looking for a bike to cruise long distance... mostly commuting to work. I've heard that the mid controls might make the riding stance be a little cramped for someone my size and that I probably should go with forward controls. Also, I'm leaning toward the Nightster, so anyone my size with a Nightster out there??

Thanks a bunch, and I hope to be riding the roads with you all soon!
I am 6'3" 300lbs and love the feel and size of my 2015 Iron 883 with forward controls. I am also looking to upgrade my shocks. But the point of my message is to let you know it's possible and a comfortable size bike. If you look at the specs for other cruisers with bigger engines, you'll notice the same seat height on the "bigger" bikes. Some models may have more clearance, but if the Sportster is the style you like, go for it. It's super comfortable for me. Being a beginner, I don't have much experience with other bikes, other than the 500 street I rode in the MSF course. But I don't wish for a bigger bike because the 883 suits my needs which is back country road exploration and time out of the house.

Cheers
