Default Sportster fuel gauge won’t read below full

https://www.harley-davidson.com/us/en/shop/Sportster-Fuel-Gauge-Kit/p/75031-09?

I installed this kit 3 years ago. Now suddenly my gauge reads full all the time. Any advice to troubleshoot?

The sensor in the tank failed on mine, lucky for me it was still under warranty. It sucked to having to pull the fuel pump/sensor assembly back out of the tank though. It would read full, then suddenly read empty, then maybe half full. It was a crap shoot as to what it would read.

Using the old trip meter works for me.

I was hoping this is not the case. Harley wants $142 for what looks like mostly a $5 part. There’s no way cleaning the metal contacts and replacing the wires on the sensors harness would fix it?

Nothing wrong with trying to fix the one you have first. I'd have no idea where to start as mine was still under warranty, so I just pulled it and replaced it. I'd be careful though, don't know if it's possible but... wouldn't want an electrical short inside a gas tank.

I'd be interested if you do try and repair the sensor, what you found bad and how you fixed it.

So why don't you try cleaning the contacts/replacing wires on it and let us know the result ?

Thanks!

T.
