Windshield Height

That's a good starting point...the main thing is that you want to be looking over it when in your normal riding position, you don't want to be looking through it. If you can't find a windshield with quite the right height, you can always get a slightly larger one and have it cut down at a glass shop, or DIY. That's what I did, happy as a clam.

Your height is not a very good indicator of windshield height. Your torso length may vary considerably from other riders of the same height. I followed the rule of thumb and did the measurements and ended up with a shield that was still too short. The turbulence was terrible. But, a taller (2") shield was just right. Good luck.

I have HD Compact Low Profile QD shield. I want to be able to look over it and keep the wind in my face but keep it off my torso. It works for me, but as BWLucky13 mentioned, it doesn't work for everybody. I don't think the turbulence is terrible, but it just may be I'm used to shorter shields. 100 mph, rain, 35 mph crosswinds, helmet/no helmet...doesn't really bother me. Oh, these conditions do NOT happen at the same time!!!!!!
Sit on the bike with your normal cruising posture. Have someone hold a yardstick at the top of the headlight. At what range would you like to see over the shield? Ideally, it would be low enough that you could sit erect and EASILY see over the shield on an uphill grade, and high enough so you can slump down a bit and get protected from the wind/cold/rain if it bothers you. Mine is shorter than that, and I'm happy about it. When it starts getting cold enough for discomfort I wear a helmet with face shield. When it gets cold enough for frostbite, I wear a modular helmet with either balaclava or bandana wrapped around my neck up to the bottom of my nose. Works for me, but YMMV.
