Default Tachometer for 2008 1200

What's the cheapest way (within reason) to add a tach to an 08 1200N?
I like the Harley combined one, but $280+ is a little high for me right now... but I really want a tach. Are there any reasonable alternatives? I'm not too worried about it looking great, just as long as it works. I'll probably get the Harley one within a year, but I'm in college right now and $$ is precious (I'm just happy to have a bike!)

I have the same problem getting a cam: student with no $$$! I would check with the dealer on this; your self-diagnostics mode in the speedometer, or "WOW" test, reads for DTC's in a tachometer, if equipped, or "no rsp" if not. Not sure myself if it would need ECM "learn" after install which would be some added expense. as far as ease of installation, I wired one up on my '01 XL1200C and my '97 FLSTC: both do not have the diagnostics, obviously, and the tachs were HD brand. The console double-mounted on the XL went in pretty easy, if I remember right, but the tank-console FL's directions were basically thrown out and I had to figure out the "what-wire-does-what-and-goes-where" thing to make it work. Tachs are great (esp. for setting the idle and other on-board carb settings) just make sure to ask about the ECM compatability question.

I'd like a tach, also. But be careful. I was messing around with my speedo to clean the face (I have streaks and crud on the inside glass face of the speedo) and I put it back together, and now I have the ECM throwing bogus codes (P0373 and P0374). I screwed something up, and with my electronics diagnostics manual, it looks like I have to have the ECM reprogrammed. My point is (I think) be careful when you mess around with that stuff.
