Default changing levers

Is there a trick to getting the front brake lever off a 2007 XL 1200R?

I've followed the directions that came with the replacement levers, (you're not supposed to take the bar mount apart they say) as well as the service manual and I can't get that mother out. It SEEMS like the bar mount needs to be taken apart because the shape of the business end of the lever doesn't look like it will fit through the gap.

Thanks.

I also had problems getting mine off so I just waited until I changed out my bars then replaced them. So I guess you could say I did take the bar mount apart, no problems though.
