I think it would depend on what your doing with them. Doesn't the XR have a shorter wheelbase and less rake? If its heavier and shorter it might outperform the ducati on twisty roads. I really don't know that much about the ducati, but it does look pretty long and it also looks alot taller than the XR.
The Ducati has a 24 degree rake where the XR1200 is 29.6 and the Ducati has a 56.7 wheelbase where the XR1200 is 60. The Ducati, MV Augusta and Aprilia are all similar in rake and wheelbase so they can turn real quick with an ease for the tip in. If either of these 3 were to meet the XR1200 in a good canyon I wouldn't want to watch as it is very likely with equal riders on board the XR is about to get it's exhaust handed to it.

i can take the fairings off my ducati SS and i have a monster. but forget the monsters altogether, the best is a ducati sport 1000, BEAUTIFUL bike, and its a way better match for the XR if you had to compare bikes from these two manufacturers, this one is designed strictly after its famous road race bikes from the 70s.
other than that, harley really needs to just make a regular sportster with some real SPORT, start with lighter stronger frame, buell xb12r engine, maybe with 4valve heads and overhead chain driven cams, light weight rims and inverted forks on good suspension, 2-1 exhuast and nice airbox, while keeping the same riding posture and fenders and tank as a stock sportster, definately paint it up in some racy colors. overall it would have to make at least 100 HP and more than 85 ft lbs of torque, and weight less than 420 lbs. possible? of course, will the public accept it? I think it will sell alot better than the XR, and it will be a REAL nice competitor to the ducati sport GT and ducati sport 1000 and modern triumph bonneville. what do you guys think of that? would you buy a sportster if it had all these qualities?

Give it the qualities of an S4Rs and I am in. That's a serious naked twin.
Suzuki Bandit 1200. I owned three of them in the past. They are bullet proof and inexpensive to buy and care for.
Spend a little extra on a fox shock or a werks performance shock and some sticky tires and you are good to go. The ZRX 1200 is nice too, but I have never ridden one. I find Ducati's to be too expensive and they need to much maintenance. JMHO....

Not anymore, their new maintenance schedule is far better than even 3 years ago. Still expensive but much better. The engine is but one piece to the product. Look at the overall package and then the price becomes understandable and very reasonable for what you are buying..
