Default speedometer reeds faster than actual speed

Hi, I've got an 06 xl 1200c, insalled a se ignition module, now speedo reeds about 20 mph faster than actual speed at 60 mph, module application says 04 and up," OE pending". runs great, any ideas on how to recalibrate speedo without stealership?

lets see if you had a 04-05(built before oct 04) there is a service bulitin for eratic speedo 10% out of wack but youres is a 06 so that is out but it seems you got a bad icu if this problem started after you upgraded from a stock unit to a screaming eagle

ok, so if it's an early model module did i install a speedo problem? if so what's the fix? i'd hate to put the stock unit back, really enjoy leaving the baggers in the dust.

The ICM reflash is for 04-05 bikes with STOCK ICM'S. And those generally read 5 mph higher. If you bought an SE (Screaming Eagle) ignitition and it is reading 20mph higher it is defective. You should have it exchanged or returned.

I put a SE module (31784-04A) on my 06 883 sportster, and the speedo went 10 mph fast. Loved the higher rev limit (7000), but the speedo off was bugging me. It helped the carb farts, but still got one once in awhile. Just installed a Thunder Heart module (Part# 201526 from Dennis Kirk) and it lets you calibrate the speedo. Along with setting the timing curves, rev limit, etc. etc. So far, I like it. Still playing with the curves. Also has wires for shift light, tach, and stage rev limit. Not a bad deal for a couple of hundred clams. Oh yea, NO carb farts now. Apparently I have the timing advanced a tad more than the stock ICM, or the SE unit. Still trying to find someone who knows what the stock ignition curves are for my 06 883, so I have a base to go by.

Does anyone have the above mentioned service bulletin, my dealer and Harley's customer service cliam there is't one. My wife has 05 1200 custom made 8/04. We complained last year that the speedo is off, and told there was nothing that could be done.

If you flash the SE module, as per the service bulletin, it will turn it into a stock module, re-setting the rev limit, and timing to the stock settings. "Don't do it"

Was that eratic speedo reading for all pre 10/04 Sportsters, or just one of those "hit & miss" random problems?

Reason that I'm asking is that the 2005 1200C I recently purchased was manufactured in 07/04 (as shown on the sticker). Right after I purchased the bike I checked the accuracy of it's speedo, and at an indicated 65 MPH the actual speed was 64 MPH, which is pretty close.

No idea if it was 'reflashed' by the original owner, or if the bike was one of the lucky ones that came from the factory with an accurate speedo.

Sorry guys, the problem is not a defective unit. The 06 transmissions are different. The 2004-2005 models had straight-cut gears in the transmission; whereas the 2006 has helical-cut gears. Long story short, the speedo reads off of the final gear, which has more teeth in an '06. The only difference from the perspective of the ICM is the pulse-rate of its speed sensor.
Learned that from Lynx on another forum.
