Which windshield with Mini-Apes????
#11
I have an 09 Nightster and am looking to put a windshield on. I know, I know. Don't do it. It'll ruin the look of the bike. I never even considered it until I took a little road trip this weekend. Riding 70 into a 20 mile an hour headwind sucked. Really looking at the Memphis Shades Del Rio and Del Rey. I'm only 5'4". I measured from the top of my headlight to the tip of my nose and it's 16 1/2". The Del Rey is only 13" and the Del Rio is 15".
It'll only be on the bike for road trips and maybe when it gets cold for trips to work.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I almost never ride without mine.
I ride 125 miles daily to work on the interstate, and a windshield is a life saver.
Take a look at the HD detach windshield. Your dealer might have one in stock and you can see how it works.

Resurrecting an old thread, I know...
I bought a QD windshield the day I got my 2009 XL1200C. I absolutely HATED the feel of the bike with it on. It makes the bike feel heavy and sluggish, not to mention the helmet buffeting. The addition of apes only made the need to use it on the freeway that much greater.
I decided to try a backrest. Now the windshield hardly ever gets put on. A backrest provides all the support needed to counter the wind.
I originally started with a Protac backrest. It was VERY comfortable and a bargain. The downside to it, same as the newer QD backrests would have, is that it's on or it's off for the whole ride.
I swapped it out for a Mustang Wide seat with integrated backrest. The backrest is not as comfortable, but it DOES fold up and fit in one side of my Plunderdogs. I can put it on to ride the freeway to work in the morning, then take it off go surface streets backrest-free on the way home.
Anyway, just another option that, for myself, works way better than a windshield.

Here is a pic of my 14" Windvest.
Not sure it's a fair representation since it came off a chopper and I made a custom mount for it. I probably have it a little lower than their standard Sportster brackets. Gets the wind off my chest. I think it makes the wind noise on my head louder but doesn't make my head do any shaking or anything. Trade off is worth it to me.
