92 Sportster..... I want to take off the rear fender so I can have it painted.

Any idea how to remove it? I looked at it and it seems as though I'm gonna have to remove a few rivets & bolts. Is the rear fender 2 piece?


Any help or suggestions would be most welcome.

 

Its easy remove the seat, the fender struts, the wires un plug with one plug under the seat and there should be one bolt to take out of the frame thats about it easy 10 mins

 

no its in one piece there may be a few relays on the fender like mine had u just pop them out of there prongs you dont have to cut anything or move any wires..

 

well, mines an '87, and when i tore mine off to paint, there was no plugs for the wiring for the turn signals and brake light. I had to cut the wires and later when I put it back together, I bought a harness plug from radio shack and make a custom plug for easier removal for future jobs. Other than the wiring, it's not too terrible of a job. The rivets you're seeing are the second part of the fender, it's a plastic mudflap piece or whatever. I don't remember how I took it off before, but there's no wiring or anything attached to it, so I don't think it was too bad. The wiring on mine was pretty chafed, and the colors were hard to make out, so label them with masking tape if you don't have a wring diagram and plan on using the same wires. Also, if you tie a string to the wires before you pull them out, it makes pulling them back through the wiring channels a LOT easier.

 

You unbolt it and take it off.

 

that mudd flap was just apart of the fender on mine the hole fender just comes right out on mine mudd flap and all

 

From the factory, your brake light wire and two signal wires run in "keepers" (clips) under the fender. The turn signal stalks are two of the bolts that hold the fender to the struts.

Yes, remove the seat first. You'll see the wires heading to the rear of the bike. One way or another, you'll have to disconnect the signal wires so you can pull them through the hollow turn signal stalks. Don't know where the brake light might disconnect because mine was already bobbed when I got it. Since the taillight has to come off anyway, that may be a good place to cut (and splice) the wire. Once you've unbolted the fender, you'll have to pop the four relays out from their holders, then just leave them hanging there.

After you pull the fender out, you'll still need to drill out the rivets that hold that plastic "mud flap" and the four relay keepers. Easy to reinstall with a pop rivet gun after the new paint.

took mine off, it was just a few bolts and then just pull the wires to the lights out, but i have a 09 iron might be different on the older sporties
