Carb spitting &popping Continued
Earlier I placed a post on the sporster Forum complaining about backfiring thru the carb and spraying gas everywhere. I now have finally fixed this thing . When I purchased the bike it is a 2004 883c it had 1000 miles on it and someone had placed SE2 pipes on it and claimed the carb had been rejetted but they used the stock aircleaner. I purchased the screaming eagle air cleaner kit thinking not enuff air . Problem still there . Last Night i tore into the carb and rejetted it myself. I used a 048 for the low speed jet and a 180 for the main. I then drilled the plugs out on the screws for the fuel air adjustment . I turned the screws out slowly till I could go 1/4 throttle without spitting and popping . I went for a ride and ran the crap out of it . More power then ever before and most of all no carb backfire . I did a read on the plugs and they appear to be burning a nice tan color . I am thinking I have fixed this problem what do you think ? anything else to check or do I need a longer ride ?

RE: Carb spitting &popping Continued
Pretty much what I said there was what i did was went to a website www.nightrider.com and they had exploded views of the carburator
and i printed out the sheets read the part on fine tuning . Then i went to the shop and bought the jets i thought i needed and installed them. Then I drilled out the plug and started turning the screws . I had finally come to the conclusion I was either going to fix this or screw it up . I just took my time and followed the procedure. Keep in mind I do not have a shop manual for this bike yet so I have been getting all my info from these forums and such. Here is the link for the information I used i found it to be great info. http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/d...d_manuals.html

This is what you really like to read! Someone who realized they had a problem, researched it it, jumped in and fixed it. Probably how most of us have figured this stuff out. When I first started riding I could not afford to have the dealer find out what the problem was so I was forced to to it myself. Very rewarding but often frustrating. Alot of hit and miss.
One thing to watch is the 48 may (?) be too rich for a 883. Check the plugs for awhile or put in a new set (use the regular HD plugs not fancy splitfire, etc) Use 2 1/2 turns out for the fuel/air screw as a starting point
Great job!!..................keep the shinny side up

RE: Carb spitting &popping Continued
My son recently purchased a 1996 Sportster XL1200, used of course. It was spitting and sputtering a bit. The intake gaskets were bad, real bad. Since the carb had to come off anyway, he thought we should freshen it up and add a Dynojet kit. Now it pops and spits when revved up but when it's put in gear and clutch released it falls flat on its face? More gas..less acceleration. Any thoughts?
