Best thing you can do is get a Service Manual. And continue to ask questions here.

Start with the simple things first. If you had battery problems, the voltage to the ignition coil may have dropped. This could cause the spark plugs to foul. A bad plug will not burn all the fuel, leaving unburned gas exiting the exhaust.
