I haven't had any problems with the drain hose. I also thought it was kinda lame the first time I changed the oil. Lately, that's about the only thing on my bike I haven't had problems with.

You should follow the instructions to pour about 4 ounces into the new filter. As was said, a total of about 2.8 quarts.

I use it but I really need more step by step. These manuals assume I know something. I need steps like "before turning that bolt/nut be careful as it may be seized or have lock-tite on it,causing the bolt/nut to strip with any force at all"...kind of thing!. but that's just me..

Harley Service Manual is damn near idiot proof. I didn't know crap about working on a bike. Got the HD manual, ask a few questions on this forum. I've done some fairly major repairs, and rebuilds in the last 3 years

As you can tell there is not really a correct answer to an oil question.

I've been running 2 qts in my 2002 (modified) sportster for about 23k miles. It has less drag on the flywheen & much less spits out the breathers. I don't sit in traffic for hours tho.

Make sure you put oil in the filter, a dry filter can send air to the oil pump and cause it to cavitate. The hose system also needs to be full of oil for the same reason.
