Default 1973 Sportster

I am working on a friends 73 sportster (KICK-START only) XLCH (I think) badge on fork but that could have been put on by previous owne. He is having problems with the charging system. he has only owned the bike for about 8 months and the previous owner re-did the wiring. well it's not charging he has just replaced the Battery, Regulator and Generator. and still will not charge. He said he did polarize the generator when he put it on. i don't know if he really knows how to do it properly. I am thinking the wiring is messed up, I found a wiring diagram on the internet that shows both the 73-74 XL and XLCH, his regulator looks like the regulator on the XL model diagram but it shows a starter and his doesn't have an electric starter so do you thing he got the wrong regulator or does it not really matter, are the interchangeable?

Best thing for him to do is take it to the dealer and have them go over it. Usually a good dealer can figue something out in less than an half hour.
