Default fuel reserve on '07 nightster

Ok, another dumb newbie question for you:

I looked all over the bottom of the fuel tank, where is the reserve/off valve?

I have a manual on order so it will answer the question probably but in the meantime......

(ps: I did a search and couldn't find the answer)

There isn't one. With fuel injected bikes there is no petcock and there is no "reserve". That is why you will find that the low fuel light is rather pessimistic. If you run out of gas, you're out.

The fuel pump sits inside the tank and needs to be able to pull from the bottom of the tank. Hence, no "reserve."

Ah I thought as much.....I read a little on the aftermarket fuel gauges etc and saw the fuel pump assembly inside the tank. Makes sense.....

With all the talk on how big the reserve is on sporties I went out the other day looking for it....

I'll have to pay attention now to how big the tank is and how much I put in right after the light goes on. Just from memory, the light went on and I put $9.00 in at $1.08/litre. Crikey, that's like 1/3 in reserve considering its a 12.5 litre tank....I wondered why I was filling up all the time. Makes sense though, if I am using 2 gallons before the light comes on, and I'm getting about 76 - 80 miles, that's 40 mpg bombing around town.

Sounds about right. Unfortunately the fuel pump takes up space in the tank, so your 3.3 gal tank doesn't actually hold that much. Which is why the 2.2 gal tank in the 48 seems ridiculous.

that makes sense with my rough calculations.

Nice to know how much approximately I have so I don't get stranded. Some of the roads I ride are so barren I could be out there for days before someone came by hehehe.

Does your speedo have twin odometers, A&B? If so, reset "A" at every fill up and you'll know where you stand and not have to worry about the reserve.

It probably has to trip odometers and a regular odometer. That's what I do. I use the one trip od. for distance from last fill-up.

Yeah I read that pointer somewhere else here. These forums are freakin awesome!!!

I use A to determine the fuel level, I was wondering though how much is left because my mileage sucked a$$ if I was burning through the whole tank at 76 - 80 miles. If I'm using only 2/3 that makes sense.

It's nice to know now that if the light comes on and I'm on a deserted backroad I won't have to worry about becoming bear bait (and we do have em up here, one mauled a guy about 20 minutes from where I live).

Just don't depend on the light, they are notoriously inaccurate.
I have the 3.3 gal (13 litre) tank and normally go to 150 Km before refilling and usually put in about 9 litres, that's just normal easy riding, if I have really been hotdoggin it it's more like 120 Km.
