Default iron 883 - low fuel light turns on on highway

So i picked up my new used bike 50 miles away from home and rode it home on the highway. the guy i bought it from said he had a full tank which was true cause i checked and he was very honest with everything. also gave me a awsome deal on the bike. Anyway i noticed 2 days in a row the low fuel light turns on whenever im on the highway with a full tank. Any of you guys seen this before? gonna stop by to the dealer while is still in warrenty

Common problem with the fuel injected Sportys. Just use one of the trip meters.

Mine did it as well, but then not to long ago I undid the main fuse while doing some work on it. When I put it back in the problem hasn't happened since, knock on wood. Give it a try, maybe I got lucky or maybe it reset the sensor somehow.

Yeah I have the same problem with my 08 sportster. When ever I kick it up over 60mph the low fuel light turns on. I have gone over 100 miles with no stops on the interstate with the low fuel light on. I just ignore it and go by the trip meter.

You can have the dealer service dept do a quick look over as well while you're in there just to make sure all components are good to go for you as a new owner. Plus they'll add you into the system should any warranty issues arise.

sunday i did the longest ride without really stopping since i bought my nightster,
the low fuel light came on at 109 miles by the time i found a station i had 116 on
the odo and filled up.
right to the top only took 2.38 gallons so i had nearly 1 gallon left in the tank
other times i have had the light come on as early as 65-70 miles and only put in
1.6 gallons so dont trust the light. you have 2 trip meters always reset one when you fill up and you will be good to go.

by the way, where did you end up buying your bike?

How big is the gas tank on the 883 iron?

The fuel lights seem to go off around a gallon left in the tank, but the fuel is sloshing around, so it cant be real accurite.

At 40 to 50 miles a gallon, and a 2.5 gallon tank, which likely holds less as the bung is at the top and the fuel pump is inside, 60 miles would be about right for the light to come on.
Better it comes on early than late!

The light is latching, so anytime the sending unit reads below some point for some amount of time, the light comes on and stays on.
Anything but smooth steady running will have the gas sloshing around all over inside the tank, its hard to have a light be accurite.
A gauge would be better, as it can read up and down, not just trigger on the lowest reading.

I reset my trip meter on gas fillup, and look for gas roughly around 100 miles. I know I can go much further, and do if there are gas stations around, and on the hiway, I could likely do 150 miles or more before the light comes on, that would leave 1.5 gallons in the tank, if it really holds 4.5, but I suspect it holds less....

Short trips and I might only get 100 miles till the light comes on.

Iron tank is 3.3 gal. My low fuel light comes on sometimes on the highway, sometimes in town--it used to come on after 80 miles, now it's all over the place. I figure I can get about 120 miles per tank if I really needed to, but always fill up when I hit the 100 mile mark, sometimes sooner, depending upon where I'm going.

Just a warning to you for future reference. You did not have nearly a gallon of fuel left before you put in 2.38 gallons. The total volume and usable volume held by the 3.3 gallon tank is not 3.3 gallons. The fuel pump takes up some of that volume, and then the tank leans back slightly and the fuel pump and fuel line are smack in the middle of the tank. So the fuel line will drop below the fuel pump before the tank is dry. You were extremely close to being "empty" if you put in 2.38 gallons.

My Iron did the same thing soon as I drove it off the Harley lot. I got 134 highway miles before filling up, and still had half a gallon left when I filled up, but I didn't want to push it any further since my gas tank is raised 1.5".
