Sportster occasionally dies while riding

RE: Sporster occasionally dies while riding
Awesome!! I listen to all styles of music not just metal. I love the blues!! Derek Trucks! Joe Bonamossa! And of course all the greats.
To drain the tank, turn the petcock to the OFF position.
Make sure you have a couple of screw type hose clamps because the factory ones are one-time use clamps. You have to pry them off and then they are useless.
Once you get the clamp off, get a suitable container to hold the gas (NOT GLASS) and then turn the petcock to reserve and drain it out.
Getting the petcock off after that is self explanitory. Just BE CAREFUL!!
Do yourself a HUGE favor, soak the clymer in some of the extra gas and burn it!!
Get yourself a HD Service Manual for your specific bike. I have both, I use the clymer for a jiffy stand block when I park the bike in the grass.
The HD manual breaks it all down. Worth EVERY penny! If you do a search in these forums for CHICAGO HARLEY DISCOUNT there is a couple of stores in Chitown that do 20% off so you can get the manual for less than the $58 bux all the other stealers want for it. Either, or it IS worth it!
Hope this helps.

Yep,it helps a bunch,and I really appreciate it.
I like all sorts of music, too.
My blues tastes run to a bygone era.Artists like Howlin' Wolf,Muddy Waters, and Freddie King are personal faves.
Also really into early Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Modern cats I like are Omar and the Howlers,Bugs Henderson, and Smokin' Joe Kubek.

Your fuel petcock has a vacuum hose connected to it. Fuel will not flow unless the motor is running. If the vacuum diaphram is defective or if you have a loose or damaged vacuum hose it can cause the symptoms you are having. Also, you will not be able to drain the tank through the petcock without applying vacuum.

Thanx DJ you are correct. We found it was easier to just remove the tank, keep the cap on, turn the tank on it's side and remove the petcock assembly and drain it that way. Although, you can suck on the vacuum hose to get the flow going...maybe invite the girl next door over?? ;-)

Removed the battery, and tested with a Fluke meter.
It reads 12.7 volts, which is what it should read.
Went ahead and put a new battery in it anyway.
It can't hurt, and may fix the problem.
I don't know how long a motorcycle battery is good for,but it is probably about time to swap it no matter what.
We'll see how it does and report back.

i had the same problem once, there was a bad cell in the battery that was makin the battery crap out randemly. We tested it, seemed fine. Charging system seemed fine. I finally just replaced the battery and no more problems with it dying. go figure.

RE: Sportster occasionally dies while riding
Well,I guess it wasn't the battery.
Just went and topped the gas tank off,and rode through the neighborhood.
Everything seemed fine, until it died again.
Tried a restart, and it wouldn't.Pulled the choke all the way out,and it started briefly, then died again.
Got to push it home-a nice mile walk.
So probably it is a fuel delivery issue.
Guess I'll drain the tank of gas next, and see what I can find about the fuel screen thing.
Any way that can be removed, and just install an easily visible, easily replaceable fuel filter in the line?

I disconnected the fuel line at the carb.
Put the rubber hose end into my plastic gas can.
I can't get ANY fuel to come out of the tank,no matter where I set the petcock!!
Sounds like a blockage,huh?
Oh,on re-reading,I see where ya'll told me this already.
I ain't sucking on no gas line,though.
