Default What size torx?

What size torx bit do I need to remove the shocks on my 09 Sportster? The largest I have it a T40, and that's not big enough.

I don't know the size, I can check when I get home... do yourself a favor and replace them with Grade 8 1/2 -13 bolts (upper bolts - coarse thread) lower bolts are 1/2 - 20 (fine thread) .... those Torx bolts are pathetic

Mine are T50's also. I've never had a problem with the larger torx bolts. I don't see a need to replace them.

Thanks for the replies,, I found a set at Sears for $19 with every size from T10 to T60 including the odd sizes T27 and T47..

I have had some not so happy times with Torx screws, but not planning on replacing them unless I have to.

I'm starting to get real ticked off with this. How do you get the bottom bolt off the right side shock.. There is no clearance between the nut and swingarm for a box end wrench or socket and really no clearance for any kind of wrench with the belt shield there, and you can't get the fricking belt shield off because it is on the same nut.

This is by far the most difficult bike I have ever owned to work on. Is there some special wrench? Not that you should have to buy a special tool for something this simple. And you shouldn't have to replace the factory bolts because they are total crap.

Try spinning the bolt to get the nut at an optimal position.
A 3/4" open-end worked for me.

Well I got them changed,, 3 pieces of 4x4 and had my son help me pick the back or the bike up and set the 4x4s under the bike.. had to buy a different open end wrench because the one I had was too beefy and wouldn't fit on the right side. Had to take off the rear muffler because shocks being longer, it was in the way putting in the bottom bolt, seems fine once the bolt is in.

Raised the bike up about an 1.5 inches, and definetly a much softer feel sitting on it.. Did not get a chance to take it out for a ride yet.. and it is suppose to rain tomorrow. But still, I got it done.
