1991 883 Hugger Brake Stiffener repair
Hey folks, new to the forum and have a question.
The brake stiffener (the part that sits behind the right footpeg that the brake cylinder mounts to) has rusted right behing the foot peg.
I got a new one (chrome even!) and would like to replace it.
Seems pretty easy until I get to taking the footpeg off. Do I just unscrew it? in the parts manual, it looks like there is a locking nut behind it. How do I get to it?
Smooth sailing if I can get the footpeg off.
Thanks!

The foot peg is attached to a clevis pin (sp) and the master cyl bracket slides on to this if I remember correctly.
To remove the footpeg/clevis you :
1. remove exhaust system to avoid scratching the front pulley cover. You might be able to loosen front exh bolts and rear bracket bolts by muffler to get . Before trying this shoot exhaust nuts with PB blaster and let sit over night so you dont break the exhaust studs removing the nuts.
2. remove the threaded rod cotter pin that attaches to brake pedal helpful and let it hang dwn. you can now remove 2 bolts for master cyl bracket and zip tie out of your way.
3. 3 bolts? hold front pully cover on and put into a piece of cardboard marking where they came from, as I think they might be different lengths.
4. with cover off the bike remove cotterpin inside of cover and remove nut holding clevis pin. Note where the original alignment of it so footpeg is at the right angle when you tighten it back up.
reassemble in reverse. You will need 2 cotterpins and 2 exhaust gaskets for by the cyl head, blue locktight to put on cover bolts when reinstalling. Antisieze apply to exhaust studs is a good idea too.

This is the time to check over this bike, which may be new to you. Change brake fluid front and rear with new, change fork oil too. inspect all rubber gas lines and vacuum hose and replace where them. 20 yrs old. Find a service manual used and go over all the engine mounts and retorque all critical fasteners recommended.
