Default 2003 Sportster Gas Tanks

I'm looking at getting a bigger gas tank for my 03 Sportster 1200 Custom. I've been looking at J&P Cycles, and they have a whole bunch of different options. The current tank I have is the small peanut tank, 2.5 gallons I think.

Like I stated, I am looking for a bigger tank, and was wondering if anybody had any helpful info on this subject. Also, maybe some different web sites that I could possibly look at for tank options.

Thanks for any help!

Did you buy the bike with a different tank than stock or switch it yourself? It should come with a 3.3 gal tank stock. You may be able to find some of those around on ebay from guys who swapped cheaper than a new tank. Good luck in your search!

I've been looking also and have found a few 4 gallon tanks on ebay, looks like they go for anywhere between $250.00 - $350.00 and buy the time you get it painted to match the bike your into it for around $450.00. hard to do when it only gets you an extra half gallon.

You're right, I'm wrong. I saw the "C" and assumed the bigger tank. Thanks for the accuracy check!

So other than that mix up, I still recommend he search for one of those 4.5gal tanks that come off of certain custom models. That's quite a bit more mileage per tank than the 3.3 that we both have. Personally, I like being forced to stop and stretch, but if you're racking up the miles I can see where it would be a pain.

Same here. I'm fine with the mileage I get as well. If someone has put a 2.2 or whatever on it that would suck a bit.

Agreed. OP, if you do have one of the 2.2gal peanut tanks on it, you may find that switching to the stock 3.3gal will be enough for you. Go to some of your local bike nights and ask around about tank capacity. You'll find a lot of people who are willing to talk and a lot of different opinions. The biggest question I guess would be, what type of riding do you want to do? If the answer is just the pain of having only 2.2gal, the 3.3 may solve that. If you want to hit the highway a ton, the 4.5 will suit you better.

Thanks for all the input. The tank on it is stock. I bought it used from a friend of the family and am pretty sure it was the stock tank. It's the 03 1200 custom anniversary edition. I'm looking for something bigger than the tank I have. I m averaging maybe a hundred miles or so on tank. I'm looking at going to Sturgis this year, and don't want to be 'that guy' that has to stop every 100-125 miles just to fill up. I think I am looking at a 3.5 gal size. The 4.5 gal would look kinda funny on that small of a bike. Alright, I'll keep looking on Ebay, and at J&P Cycles.

Thanks for all your input!

That's a 3.3 gallon King tank. I just had my bike repainted and wanted to go with a bigger tank but I could only find one that was a 4 gal and I didn't care for the looks. I'll see if I can find it for ya.

Edit: Here it is http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-STR...item43a4aaa8f9 They make one with a single gas cap in the middle but good luck finding anyone that has it in stock, I never could. As you can see you'll be giving up the sportster's looks for a bigger tank. After putting 800 mile days on mine before I can say the gas stops will be a much needed break. I'm glad I kept the 3.3 tank on mine cause I don't take those longer trips enough to justify giving up the look of my bike.
