hugger is the name that was used for the "low" models. Instead of an 883low, it was an 883 hugger. I think that they switched over to the "low" in 05, but I could be wrong.

You're right. For my model year, 2002, there was a XLH883 and an XLH883 Hugger. The only difference between the two was a lowered rear suspension by like 2.5" (don't quote me on that). Everything else is exactly the same. The newer equivalent is the low model.
I have always heard that a hugger is called a hugger because since they are lower, the fender tends to "hug" the tire. You can accomplish this with struts as well, bringing the fender down close to the tire, but I have only heard that called a hugger fender...
