Mine pings sometimes... Ive got a bub7 2into1 exhaust and SE stage 1 air cleaner... dynojet powervision too...
It will ping just off the throttle. If its been sitting idling at the lights, then it will definately do it... I'm guessing the rpm must be around 2000-2500....
Might try pulling a couple degrees timing in that area... if I can ever be bothered...

"As a side benifit from what I can tell you will almost double your HP ending up at around 92HP versus the 54 stock".
I've read conflicting info as to how much HP & Torgue you get when you do what you have done to your bike. I've done a Stage 1(exhaust pipes, A/C and Power Commander V). The shop that did this mod said I would gain 10-15 more HP and a cooler running engine. I do noticed a cooler running engine, better engine response but I doubt this doubles the HP. Oh and yes my MPG's have dropped about 5 MPG.

The sound you are hearing is just a pop from inside the exhaust. My 08 nightster does it too if I am siiting and quickly crack the throttle. I took it to the dealer and they said its just a backfire basically and that a tune would help smooth it out. Im not tuning until I install a Stage 1 or 2 A/C though so I just deal with it. It doesnt hurt the bike he said it is just from the mapping of the ECM.

I've noticed that when I really open up the throttle hard I notice a loud knock or "tink" sound. It does it everytime, but only after initially opening up the throttle. I'm not lugging the engine, and I use premium fuel. Is it just the nature of the Nightster's engine, or is there something else to be concerned about? I only have 2,500 miles on it, and it had the full 1,000 mile service after break in. Any ideas? Thanks!
Does the 'knock" happen less if you shift at higher rpms? Try to shift up later. Look at your speedo and shift up to second when you hit just over 20mph, and then 3rd at over 40mph. Tell me if you feel any difference in the knock.
BTW there is no "Nightster engine". Yours has the same engine that's on my 48 or a Custom or any other XL1200.

Mine does it off and on since the day I got it. 8,500 miles on it now. I noticed it more when it was really hot out, last summer when it had fewer miles on it. It does it less now that I downloaded an improved stock tune using a superchips vigilante. More roll on power and less pinging (though it's never done it a lot, or consistently). I use 92 or more octane every time.
These motors are noisy. Especially when newer.
