Does any one have the part number for the bushings? I have the same issue too. replaced the spring and still has a lot of slop in it. So much that it drags on left turns. I bolted a piece of wire hanger and a compression spring to the primary chain tensionor and to the cotterpin that holds the kick stand up. it does help for a while, but it does move out of alignment after a while.

 

Not all bikes have bushings. My 92 Sporty doesn't have them.

 

A lot of great ideas here,appreciate all,just did the spring on my sportster used my floor jack to spread the spring then used the penny trick.worked great.Also I hooked the spring onto the jack axle using a small carabiner

 

In all seriousness, use safety goggles.. I had one slip and I caught it in the nose, SCARED the crap outta me

 

I went with the pulling of the pin route, with bike leaning against wall. Not that hard to put in when approached from UP position. Does make a difference in how the springs hooks are aligned. Mine was still loose - so I took kickstand off again and beat down the tab on stand that holds spring with a big hammer to increase spring span. It doesn't jiggle around anymore when riding. I never noticed or cared how it looks; its all tucked underneath everything when I'm riding.

there are several videos on how to replace spring.

 

I replaced the jiffy stand on my 2011 XL883N by placing ten 1p coins in between the coils and with the spring is located I pulled out the coins one at a time with a pair of pliers.

I originally removed the stand to get the chrome removed and have it powder coated gloss black.

 

HOG_WILD_STEVE hasn't been on here since 10/20/2011 but if he ever comes back and seen this he will be happy.

 

I used a Home Depot Everbilt 4" spring. Took off the jjify stand bumper, old spring off, new spring on. The Home Depot spring actually pulls the stand up against the bumper, where the stock one (and a replacement I tried) still let it hang down a bit. No need for pennies or using a jack to pull spring apart before install.
