Default Replaced OEM battery with unit from Batteries Plus

I know this has been bandied about before but I thought I'd rehash it for ***** and giggles.

The OEM battery in my 2006 Low finally took a dump and I set about finding a replacement. I ended up with a Xtreme X2 AGM Permaseal, model X2-14 220CCA, from the local Batteries Plus store. This battery is made in the USA by East Penn/Deka, the provider of many of Harley's OEM batteries.

From all indications, it's the same battery as OEM, except better. It has a two year warranty and has threaded holes on top of the terminals in addition to the front facing holes. The top holes were very handy for hooking up my battery tender leads. Dimension wise, the two batteries appear to be identical.

OEM battery is $114.95. This unit was $94.99 and came with a mail-in rebate for $15. Assuming I ever get the rebate, the battery will have cost $80. I think the rebate is valid for purchases made by the end of May.

CAUTION: Batteries Plus also sells another battery under the Xtreme brand name, for about $20 cheaper than the X2. It is made in China and from what I've seen online, it is a complete POS with a very high return rate. So, if you are thinking about hitting up one of these, make sure it is the X2.

Just looking at the picture you posted, the positive & negative terminals are reversed (backwards).

The pic may not be the exact battery. Polarity is the the same as OEM on the model I purchased. I put the pic up to show the graphics on the X2 series.

Harley's OEM AGM's battery's have a thicker casing then the after market mft's. A thicker shell helps the battery's longevity.

I seriously doubt you'll get 5+ years on the battery plus battery that you bought like you got with the OEM one.

Like everything else, you get what you pay for.

How can you tell how old a Harley battery is. I bought my bike used, it's an '06, if it's the original battery, I was thinking of replacing it if I catch a sale or something. There is a decal on it which has little circle knock outs for the month and day, but not the year.
