Default Decel pop on 883 EFI with PCIII = rich or lean??

Hi all,

Sorry for what is probably a repeat of a thousand questions before me... I've done a search on decel popping but I'm still not sure, as some say it can be from running rich and others say from running lean (and a few other possible things too)

My 2007 883L has a V&H air intake, PCIII from Fuelmoto and SEII slip-ons with monster baffles. I have quite a bit of decel popping, sometimes quite loud, plus it's a little bit 'lumpy' at low running revs/speeds. Not as bad as it was when stock, but it still occasionally 'coughs' a bit.

Fuelmoto programmed the PCIII to the setup I have, except it's for a Kuryakyn Velociraptor air cleaner - I changed at the last minute to the V&H. Will the different AC mean the fuel map needs altering to match the V&H one?

It is as simple as just asking Fuelmoto to adjust the map, or are there other things (spark plugs?) I should check first? (My fella installed the AC and I did the PCIII)

Thanks
Sadie.

Popping does not mean lean like most think. My XL50 pops alot and evern blows flames on Decel and it's tuned a bit on the rich side. I don't think the AC change would make that much differance since they are both high flow.

Harley's are cammed a bit hot and with aftermarket exhausts freeing that chamber pressure a lot of times it will pop. I know mines does a lot if I'm heavy on the throttle and abruptly let off the throttle. What most people don't realize is it's usually not whether it's lean or rich. Most of the time it's really the exhaust tip. with a good size exhaust the pressure released with often pop on the decel because, of the sudden lack of pressure through the exhaust itself. You'll find it happens more frequently when it's cold out too. There are multiple things that go into why it happens. You probably don't have much to worry about since most of the time it has to do with the compression, hot cams from HD and and freer flowing exhaust.

Thanks Aaron, that makes sense now. As I said, I did a search and read loads and loads of different things, so knowing which one would be relevant (if any) was proving a bit of a headache

I would check the plugs as well though if an ashen white color probably a tad lean if looking medium dark grey to a tannish brown at the tip and not black or sooty looking would not worry about it ..

This is true, cold engine and pipes do pop alot more. I like the popping myself, but some don't.

If either it's lean. I had a suzuki S40, the old savage, and that thing would pop so loud on decel people would dive for cover. It sounded like a shot gun if you did it right, and that's factory set up.
