Default Spark Plug Question

Went to Advanced Auto Parts to pick up some regular spark plugs and when I got home, my spark plug adapter doesn't fit the new ones.

1. Does AAP sell proprietary spark plugs that require a non-standard adapter?
2. In the manual it says that the H-D spark plugs have a r for a resistor or something...would using the AAP spark plug be fine?

Don't care about high performance...just want a new set since I haven't changed out the spark plugs since I bought the bike 12K miles ago.

Thanks.

If by "spark plug adapter" you mean socket, it doesn't matter, there is more than one "standard" plug base size. 3/8" & 13/16" sockets are both common spark plug sizes.

More important, is what plug you bought to replace the stock plug.

It's an Autolite brand and part/model number 4164.

Seems to be the right one according to http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hdsparkplugs01.htm.

I guess I need a new *a-dap-tor*

Why not just go to the dealer and get the right plugs for the bike? it's not like they cost alot and you know they are right. I have no idea why so many people on hear don't like to use the dealers and the HD products?

Maybe because, as in this case, HD doesn't make spark plugs. The stock HD plugs are made by Champion (RA8HC) and not only are they much cheaper at a auto parts store (~$1.50 ea), but your local auto parts store is usually more convenient than driving to the closest dealer.

BTW, the Autolite 4164 is the correct cross-reference to the stock plug.

I love how in this country you can slap on a logo and charge extra for the same product

I'll admit...i've been a fool to fall for that many times in my lifetime.

HD's ECM uses the HD plug to check resistance to activate the knock sensors on all fuel injected bikes.

If you don't want this anti knock protection by all means go cheap. It's your bike.

Yes they are made by Champion but it is to HD specifications not Champions. Again there is a good reason that they have a resistor in it.

You use like what? Two every 10K. Will the extra $6 every two years (for most) break your bank then it is time to sell that bike.

Last effort. IT IS NOT THE SAME PRODUCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Champion RA8HC is a resistor plug.
