Default Oil warning lamp glows...

Hi!

I was driving a little around the countryside today when it started raining, so I drove home. On the way home I suddenly noticed the oil warning lamp burning.

So I stopped and took a look at the oil, but it seemed to be full enough.

The oil was steaming a little, I hope thats normal when the bike is hot?

After restarting the bike the oil lamp did not burn anymore (except during startup which is normal right?)

What I also noticed was that the oil lamp wasn't glowing as bright when I noticed it during the ride as it was during the startup.

Could this be an electric problem? Or do you think there is something wrong with my oil?

Thanks!

p.s.

I had the bike in for the first inspection a month ago and what was odd was that they didn't write down what oil they used for the oil change into the service booklet, could the lamp be an indication that they didn't change the oil?

I didn't see it at the time and didn't think to ask if they really changed the oil (I was kinda certain that they'd have done it and jsut forgot to write it down since that what always is done during the first inspection right? (stupid me) )

The light is a warning for low oil pressure. If it's on when your RPM's are up, and your oil level is good, it's most likely the sensor.

Hmm thanks, the odd thing is that the lamp didn't glow anymore after I restarted the bike, should a faulty sensor always show the warning lamp?

I guess I will get the bike to harley on monda so they can check the sensor, or could it be a loose cable? That I could check myself I guess, I haven't looked into the manual, does it say where the oil sensor cable is?

Thanks

There is a section in the service manual that seals with troubleshooting this.

It could also be a faulty oil pressure lamp switch. Both the oil pressure and lamp switches are located below the oil filter (on a 2010 anyway).

Thanks again, I have a 2012 (got it early last year )

I cleaned the bike yesterday, also around the oil filter because there was a lot of gunk there. Maybe I accidently knocked something loose.

You mentioned riding in the rain, and gunk around the sender. Maybe it just got wet and grounded out slightly. Spray from the front tire could have soaked the "gunk."
