Living in Florida where it is hot most of the year I'd consider synthetic for the engine, it'll do better with higher temperatures. The mechanic at my dealership recommends just using the regular Harley tranny oil. The biggest thing is to use the correct viscosity for both. As far as brand, well that could start a whole debate.

Get to your local NAPA auto parts store BEFORE Friday (7/1) and pick up some Mobil-1 15w-50 synthetic. It's on sale for $4.99 / qt. You'll need 3 quarts, but at that price I'd pick up some extras. I just bought 2 cases... LOL
Also pick up a quart of Mobil-1 75-90 Gear Oil for the primary/tranny. If NAPA doesn't have it, Autozone usually does, ~$9.00/qt.
In addition to the Service Manual, I recommend the Fix My Hog DVD (Sportster Edition), as it walks you through all the standard service procedures.

20w-50 and 10w-40 are both multi-grade oils.
10w-40 should be used when the lowest ambient temperature is BELOW 40*F
20-w50 should be used when the lowest ambient temperature is ABOVE 40*F
