Small report, today was the first chilly morning ride I've had all year.

With cold oil (temps 48-50f this morning), I still got that heavy clunk when going from neutral to first, but the shifting remained smooth. Gears "snick" into place instead of "clunk".

I had tested this out in fairly hot weather (99F with a heat index of 105 is pretty hot) and it performed well at operating temps, so this was a good chance to see how it did at the other end of the temperature spectrum.

I did my 1000 mile service this weekend and used Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w50 for both the engine and primary, and here is what I've noticed:

Smoother shifting (both up and down)
Neutral to first "clunk" is a bit reduced
Clunk from an imperfect **** is reduced
Engine runs 8-12 degrees cooler for the same speed, gear, fuel, and ambient temps versus HD dino oil
Clockwork sound of the engine (sewing machine sound) is slightly increased

Not wanting to start another big oil thread, just reporting that on my particular bike, at the 1000 mile mark I'm very pleased with this oil.

In 3000 miles I'll change it out, get a Blackstone analysis done, and post the detailed analysis here as a followup.
Just did the same man. Notice all the same too. it sounds soooo bitch'n smooth now.
my notes are in my sig link.

As soon as I got my used Sportster I wanted to do a oil and filter change. I called Mobil and asked what they recommend for the primary/transmission of a 2000 883. They said to use their synthetic 10W40 Racing. That's what I put in the transmission. I spilled some, so I have a mix of 10W40 and 20W50 in it, but it seems to work fine. My biggest worry was a 10W40 oil might be too "light" to do the job, and I should use a oil with more viscosity, but I ran synthetic 10W40 in my air cooled 4 cylinder Honda for years, took that engine to redline on a regular basis, and that engine/transmission/clutch still ran and shifted like new when I sold it 10,000 miles later. I like full synthetic and I'm going to keep using 10W40 or 20W50 in the primary and 20W50 in the engine until I find something better.

I run Mobl 75/90 gear oil also in the tranny.

I can vouch that the Mobil 1 motor oil is great stuff. I converted the 883 engine on my bike to 1250. At 65,000 miles that 883 engine looked brand new.

That is awesome.

I'll do the 1250 conversion eventually, not sure when, but I'll do it after this bike is fully settled in and modded to my liking.

It is good to read about the great oil debates but in my neck of the woods HD synthetic is all one can get, no AmsOil, no Mobil-1.

I think I've read nearly every thread on oil in the past few days.

I wish this guy updated the thread with his results. I still can't find a firm answer on if we should run 20w50 or 75w90 in the primary.

What's the current consensus?
