Default Rev Limiter

Does anyone know if a 2005 Sporster 883 has a rev limiter. I am pretty sure it does, but I know that prior owner had a new exhaust, intake and jet kit installed...that wouldn't effect any stock rev limiter would it. I have heard the 883 is a higher reving engine (for a Harley) but don't want to blow it up

It does, and I think it's somewhere around 6,200RPM. If you're curious, put it in second and red-line it. You'll know when you've hit it. A new ignition module (ie. Screamin' Eagle) will allow you to push it to about 7,200RPM, but I would say that's unwise unless you've got enough engine work to compensate.

It does in fact have a rev limiter. Stock for an 883 should be set to 6200rpm. This prevents self-destruction of the engine through valve-float, excessive stresses, and other problems that come with running an engine not built for that high of a speed.

The only way to change your stock limiter would be to adjust the ignition module itself. This was likely not done with what sounds like a standard stage 1 for your bike. You'll be fine where it's at.

You won't want to go over 7000rpm. The valve-train would self destruct after that. You would need to valve springs, pushrods, likely a different cam profile, and possibly some different sized lifters for clearance at that speed.

Thanks for the info...not sure if I want to "test" the rev limiter but it is good to know that I have a backup when I am really pushing it.

Go ahead and try. It's there to be hit, and it's best you know what it feels like when you do.
