What are you guys using for primary oil in your sportys? I'm doing fluid change this saturday and storing it for the winter.

Gonna go with synthetic in the motor this time and it comes down to Mobil/amsoil/syn3 as my redialy avilable choices. The primary/trans is what I'm struggling with.

I never run out to 5000mi between changes (more like 1500-2000mi) and currently have formula plus in the primary/trans and HD360 in the engine

Amsoil, and if you do it right you'll leave it alone for now and change it when you roll it out in spring. Although synthetic oils are less affected, still cold temperatures have negative effect on their quality.

I run Mobil 1 V-twin in both holes.

Most will recommend changing the oil prior to winter rather than in the spring then you will have fresh oil in the bike through the winter. The argument on this is that carbon in the oil stored over the winter is hard on the cylinder walls, crankcase, etc.

I'm on the fence on this one, but I plan on riding some throughout the winter when weather permits. I've got about 2,000 miles on my engine oil right now & I think I'm gonna leave it an change it when spring comes. However, I've got fresh oil in the primary/tranny because I had to replace an o-ring on my clutch cable about 500 miles ago.

just about any oil will do , it is just gears and bearing's with a muti-plate wet clutch thrown in. oh yeah has a chain running around on a couple of sprockets.
atf is good for cold weather , outboard gear lube 80-90 is good for year round .
actually there is no need to change it unless you have got it contaminated which something ..

I used Formula+ when I changed mine right after I bought my '06 1200C. I don't know what the previous owner had in there, but I noticed a difference for the better in shifting and finding neutral after I changed it. Picked up the Formula+ because I didn't know what my options were at the time and it was what was recommended in the owner's manual. Seemed like the "safest" choice.

I follow the manual. With the exception that I use mobil Vtwin 20W50 instead of the HD syn3. I suspect it's probably the exact same product though.

I am a fan of following what the manufacturer's manual says and not trying to out think the people who made the engine.

Another vote for Formila +. I have used M1 V twin 20/50 OK, Belrays Sportster juice, not so good clunky shifting quite noisey. The Formula + smoother shifting and quieter running. Still use the M1 V Twin in the engine.

I too use the Formula+ to assure compatibility with the alternator coil insulation. And, I do believe its the quietest shifting lube, at least quieter than Amsoil 20w50 and Harley Syn3. I run RevTech 25w60 in the engine.
