Default I dun goofed and dropped a nut inside my Sportster.

Yeah....

So I dropped one of the nuts for the bolts that holds the tank inside a hole, and I believe it's inside the transmission. One of my friends is gonna come over tomorrow morning and we'll see what we can do.

Does anyone have any clue what I need to remove/open? What is this hole for? I'm reading through the service manual now. I definitely feel like an idiot lol.

Thanks!

Get one of those flexible magnetic grabbers, a flashlight, and go to town. Done that lots of times, it sucks.

I just did that a few weeks ago when I was replacing the rocker box gaskets on the rear cylinder. A nut dropped into the valve spring area. I used a buddy's pen shaped retractable magnets and it worked like a charm. Took seconds.

Flexible magnet, flashlight, small inspection mirror, and also a pair of mechanical fingers can help. I wrench on Boeing 737/757 and drop **** all the time that needs to be fished out.

and sometimes a little bit of air pressure from a blow gun will help move it around too

Well, the only "hole" in the transmission is the breather, and it has a hose coming out of the top, then curving downward. It's unlikely that's where the nut fell. It's probably under the starter... been there a few times myself.

There is no such hole on top of transmission that nuts can fall into. That would be a major design flaw to have the tranny destroyed.

Yup, under the starter is a good place to look. Had both rear exhaust flange nuts vibrate loose when the bike was new, and found them neatly resting there. Go take a look, and yes, magnet and inspection mirror could be your friend, too.

Thanks for the advice, all.

Is that the same hole as the one in the pic I attached (if you can tell)?

Anymore I spread a rag out over any area below where I am working that stuff can fall and hide, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
