Default 09 Nightster Speedometer issues

Hello everyone!! I bought a 2009 nightster and while riding I notice that the speedometer does not work most of the time. The speedo is relocated to the side of the bike along with ignition and the tank is raised, im not sure if this has anything to do with it. I notice that the engine light comes one along with the fuel light sometimes. Has anyone else had this problem and if not what do you all recommend me doing?

First of all, when you say the speedo doesn't work what exactly do you mean? Is the entire speedo dead (no backlight, no odometer, etc)? Is the needle just not moving? Does the odometer still track miles?

I had issues with my 07' with the needle dropping to zero when I first had it and it turned out to be the connector under the gas tank for the speedo. Make sure it is clean and also make sure that all the wires are pushed into both sides of the connector fully.

First thing is first, you have an 09' so you need to remove all the fuses / relays, clean them, apply dielectric grease and reinstall if you already haven't done so. 07'-09' have a poorly designed fuse block and this causes many issues.

Anyways...need some more detail on your issue.

mine does the same, its the speed sensor, mine is a 2000 though, I am not sure if the newer bikes are set up the same way.

I would be careful throwing parts at this issue. There have been a few people who put new VSS in their bikes and still had the same issue afterwards.

Again I would check the connector under the tank first. Next I would unplug the connector that goes into the VSS (located on throttle side just above the sprocket cover). Make sure there is no condensation in there.

You might need a multimeter to start testing continuity through the wiring harness to make sure you haven't crimped a wire or something hasn't rubbed through the insulation. Since you relocated the speedo I would start checking all that wiring for any signs of wear or crimps.

If all of that doesn't solve the problem I would look at this thread. A issue some guys have had is a poor ground coming from the VSS. Lots of good info....lots of posts....but should help:

By the way....is it still under warranty??
