I just filled up yesterday and calculated my mileage at 50 mpg, and I'm not that conservative of a rider.

I live in Orange County CA I ride a 2004 1200c and I get about 45 mpg between city and highway driving. Also who sits in traffic here bikes can ride in the carpool lane and it is legal to split lanes here if your sitting in traffic on the freeway your nuts.

I get 23-55 MPG on my 2008 1200 Low depending on city to highway ratio. Each time I fill up, I calculate the MPG since the last fillup. I've gotten up to 33 with in city driving alone and suspect how one drives as well as what kind of traffic can make that number change quite a lot. Aggressive driving is obviously bad for gas mileage and I'm guilty. My in city alone driving averages around 26. Get that bike out on the highway from time to time regardless -- it saves gas!

I must have a weak wrist. I normally get in the low 50. My worst was high 40s, best low 60s.
V&H Blackout 2-1, SE intake.

Fill the tank full to the brim.
Reset one of your trip meters to zero miles.
Go for a ~50 mile ride and then stop at a gas station.
Refill the tank to the brim.
Now, divide the mileage shown on the trip meter by the exact number of gallons (including tenths of a gallon) used to refill the tank. That will be your real MPG.

Now, if the first test was done with all city riding, repeat the test above out in the country where you can cruise steady for ~50 miles at 60 mph and see what that MPG number is.

Another thought, do you let your bike run for longer than a minute or so before riding? If so, that could be shortening the range of your already small tank. My owners manual says to let the bike run 30 seconds before riding. I like the way the 48 looks but the short range due to the small tank would drive me crazy.

I just want to share to everybody. Filled up the tank full, reset the trip odometer, rode 60 miles non-stop, average speed was 65MPH. Gas indicator lit up at 60 miles, stopped at a gas station - 61.8 miles on the trip odometer, filled up the tank once again - 1.45 gallons.

61.8 miles divide by 1.45 gallons = 42.62MPG

My setup:
1. 2011 Sportster 48
2. V&H short shots
3. Cobra Fi2000r Power Pro Tuner
4. Stage 1 Screaming Eagles Air Cleaner

I get about 70 miles before my gas light turns on with my 48 and when i fill it up (because i dont ride past my gas light) i only put it about 1.13 gallons. But all I have done to it are slip ond and a stage 1 air cleaner. I was afraid having a tall windshield would hurt my mileage but it actually didn't at all. Also weighing a buck fifty doesn't hurt either

Did you figure out what was causing this? I just had my 5000 mile service and now I'm getting 24 mpg I was getting about 40. All my driving is city stop and go but still I shouldn't be getting this low. What the heck could it be?

I have VH 2 to 1
Power commander 5
Stage one air

My guess would be your Power Commander 5 is running the wrong map, and is set way too rich.
Pull your plugs and check them.
Who did you get the Power Commander from, and can you get a new map?
