I have a carbed (2000) 883 and I am thinking of going to convert to 1200/1250 and I am wondering do I need to do something to the timing ..seems like I read somewhere that the timing is different on 883 and 1200's....

 

You don't need to adjust your timing. The main difference between the 883 and 1200 units is the advance. The 883 has a higher advance than the 1200, but you can't adjust that yourself. The only way to change that is to use a different advance module.

A lot of guys run the stock 883 module and don't have any noticeable problems. The higher advance could arguably be better, but that's another debate. Unless you are really hot rodding your bike, you should be ok with the stock module/timing.

 

ok, thanks....I always wondered about that...is the unit solid state ???and where is it on the bike...who knows I may be able to find a used one if i know what I am looking for...

 

It's solid state, and it is triggered by the timing rotor. It is underneath the riveted timing cover on the right-hand side of the engine. It's the part with the big "5" on it. To get to it you need to drill out the rivets and pull off the covers.
