Default VSS failure

Anyone have their VSS (vehicle speed sensor) fail? Mine seems to have failed and the bike is a 2012 with only about 2200 miles. My speedo and self canceling turn signals have both quit working. coincidently it happened right after I reflashed my ECM with a new map.

Any sensor can fail. I also noticed that the ECM harness has rubbed on the seat and will have to be replaced under warranty. Check that also

Well I checked for diagnostic codes and there were none. Not sure what is going on. I would think if a sensor failed that there would be a code.

You should have a code if it failed, or isn't reporting data. What are you checking it with? If you have a real tuner that can datalog then I'd log it and see what values are there for VS, if any. May be an ECM issue?

Went out for a quick data run today using my SEPST. I did a couple of recordings and when I looked at them on my PC there was no input for vehicle speed. It was at 0 for both recordings start to finish. I removed my seat and tank and checked all of the wiring connections in the harness to make sure everything was plugged in properly and no wires have been damaged.

Again I checked for diagnostic codes and it said none under all of the different catagories. I am checking for codes by holding in the odometer reset button and turning on the ignition then hitting the run switch. I them use the reset button to cycle through the different catagories, checking each one for codes by holding in the reset button for 5 seconds at which case it has been saying "none".

I will be taking the bike into the dealer on March 2nd to try and get this figured out. the bike is only 7 months old but I am a bit worried that they will try to say the warranty is no good because I recently did a NRHS 1250 conversion (which worked out great) and modified my map with the SEPST, which I did not buy from their dealership.

I am not sure if this is related but the last month I had it insured and on the road the low fuel light was on continuously even when the tank was just filled. Ever since the speedo died the other day, the low fuel light is off again.

I would just take it in and see what they say first. Remember, if you fawked up the install and broke the VSS, yes. OTOH, if they want to make the case that by installing the 1250 kit the VSS committed Hari Kiri, I'd love to see that. I don't talk much to service advisers. I speak to the tech

It did turn out to be a failed VSS. The dealer warrantied it. They said it was the first one they had replaced on a sportster.

Default Does the Starter need to be removed to replace the VSS?

I need to clean or replace my VSS. I'm wondering if I need to take out the Starter to get to it.

You can get to it without removing anything but you will need a modified allen key to undo the bolt.

MICH,

Did your speedo ever start working the zero out once again? I believe I just have a bad sensor but find it odd that it works sometimes then doesn't.

I have a 2013 with almost 2k miles.
