http://sales.nightrider.com/Sportster_c_13.html:
What is the best XIED product for my Sportster?

We recommend the X14iED for general use on all Sportsters. This provides the best all around performance.

For Riders that want to experiment with fuel mixtures, the VIED allows a range of fuel mixtures from 14.3 to 13.7:1. This is our recommend alternative to the X14ED. It gives you the chance to try the 14.0:1 and 13.8:1 AFR's, making the final setting based on your riding style.

For Riders with a Bar Hopper riding style (in town), the XiED can be used. Its slightly richer fuel mixture than the X14iED is well suited for in-town riding, but not high RPM, high speed riding.
Contrary to popular belief, richer is not alway better, only richer. For normal cruising in closed loop, there is a diminishing return as the fuel ratio gets richer than 14.2:1. The X14iED is set at 14.0:1 which as proven to be an excellent all around fuel mixture, especially when taking into account the adaptive nature of the HD Delphi ECM.

More.
x14ied: http://sales.nightrider.com/X14iEDtm_p_9.html
Our simple plug-n-play fuel management upgrade specifically designed for 2007 and later H-D Sportster motorcycles. Nightrider's unique patented design works inline with the H-D Bosch narrow band O2 sensor and Delphi ECM to richen the fuel mixtures. Riders can quickly and simply richen the closed loop fuel mixture on your XL883/XL1200/XR1200 engine from the stock 14.6:1 to 14.0:1 AFR. The X14iED's will add approximately 6% more fuel to the engine in closed loop operating mode than a similar unequipped vehicle. There is an indirect richening of open loop fuel mixture's through the learning mode or adaptive fuel value action, ensuring these richer 13.8-12.5:1 AFR's are also adjusted in heavy/full throttle situations.
This richer fuel mixture results in benefits that can include:
  • Less low speed engine surge
  • Cooler exhaust temperatures
  • Reduced engine temperatures
  • Improved throttle response
  • Less engine ping
Recommended for HD bikes with OEM emissions downloads. These include
  • XL 883, XL 1200, XR1200, all XL Stage 1
Upgraded exhaust systems including slip-on mufflers and full exhaust changes, and air cleaner upgrades are compatible with the X14iED(tm) upgrade.

There is an indirect richening of open loop fuel mixture's through the learning mode or adaptive fuel value action, ensuring these richer 13.8-12.5:1 AFR's are also adjusted in heavy/full throttle situations.

I put on a 2-1 exhaust, SE intake and x14ied. Less low end stumble, great all around performance and I'm still getting mpg in the low 50 range.

I have no direct comparison between the two, but I have the XiED on my 2010 Iron 883 and have no ill effect from the extra fuel it provides over the X14iED.

XIED or X14IED?

I've been running the X14iED's in my 883 for a few years. Completely happy with them.

IF I lived where I was riding in a lot of stop & go traffic, or where I was having heat issues, I would go with the XiED's or the ViED's. The XiED's run a bit richer than the X14's and the ViED's let you adjust the AFR.

Still a little confused so I'm just gonna ask.... If I decided to put some V&H slip-ons and a heavy breather air filter on an 09 nightster and I do a mixture of intown and highway riding which one would work best? Not really looking for performance improvements, just think the cone style air filters look bad ***.

The ViED's would work best, because you can adjust them. But you would be fine with the XiED's, and probably with the X14iED's. But being in Texas with hotter weather I would use the ViED's or the XiED's.

Kevin on your site you have the Xied listed for the Sportster but shows only up to 2011. Will this work on a 2012 Sporty as well?
