Tranny oil change and engine oil
I just bought a 2005 883 with 5700miles, what kind of tranny fluid does this call for or better yet what can i use, getting mixed messages in my research. Also in changing the main engine oil a drain location for this year would be helpful, thanks...
No manual

No manual > No good. This should be your first investment, will save you lots of headaches and money.
I'm using Amsoil in engine and primary.

In my TC 88 I run Mobile 1 gear lube in the trans 75-90 weight. Mobile 1 V-Twin in the crankcase,/engine

I keep running across info saying an 883 does not take tranny fluid but 20/50 instead, just want to be sure

It will take any, just be warned Mobile 1 tranny oil will kill your generator.

Put in either 20/50, same as the engine, or Harley Formula+. Your choice.

You need to order a service manual. It will save many headaches.
I use the HD branded fluids for both the engine oil and tranny. I'm going to change it again in another 1500 miles and then will change to synth for all the fluids.

It may cost a little more but when it comes to service I just get all the stuff from Hd and do it myself ...

As it has been said earlier do not use gear oil in the primary/transmission on a Sportster. It will strip the varnish off the stator (alternator for our bikes) and then you will have a lot of work ahead of you.
The HD Formula+ is pretty much the only oil that is specifically made for the Sportster shared primary and transmission. It is the only thing I will use there. I run Mobile 1 V-twin 20w50 in the engine.
