Default brake job

Hey all;
I'm replacing the brake pads on my 06 1200 Custom. Both front and rear. My question is the springs or what they call springs that sit in the brake caliper, what purpose do they serve? and what would happen if I just left them out. They make the brake job a pain.
Thanks;
Lou

I'm going to assume you don't own a service manual. Either way, I wouldn't go tearing into my brake system and removing things that I don't recognize.

But to save you some trouble, yes, you want them.

They keep your pads from rattling and also keep them from constantly dragging on the rotor. They are called anti-rattle springs, and yes you need them.
