Default Tach install for 06 883L

While waiting for the parts to come in for the motor upgrade (have to pick up at UPS tonight) we decided to install the tach on the wifes bike. Make sure you read the directions that come with the tach.

1. Remove Maxi fuse......didnt do this because battery was already removed to so the motor upgrade.

RED ARROW....Unplug the speedometer wiring harness. Located on left side of tank. (Trace the wires from the speedo if you dont know which one it is.

Cut the zip ties (2) holing all wires together.

BLUE ARROW....Gently pull harness and connector thru ignition coil bracket.

Remove two front bolts for the bracket assembly. 1/4 allen wrench Your handlebars may move or fall. Mine didnt move at all.

Remove 2 screws from headlight mounting bracket. Let it hang to the left side of the forks. 1/4 allen

Pull speedometer harness all the way out now and take it with the speedo to a bench.

Remove 2 screws for indicator light.(no arrows but 1 is to the left of the wire and the other is to the right)T10

RED ....remove 2 screws for back cover 5/64 allen
BLUE....Unscrew boot from speedo reset switch. (counterclockwise)
Remove back cover

Disconnect speedo connector. Pull it and reset button thru bottom of speedo. You have to lift up on gasket to get it thru. Note how the bottom of the gasket is placed. (there are tabs there) Dont need this harness anymore.

Push speedo out of holder. Pull from the front at the same time.

Get new bracket. Lube front gasket with glass cleaner and install speedo through front of LEFT opening. RED...front gasket.

Lube rear gasket..Do Not install yet.

Hook up connector from new harness to speedo.
Put rear gasket on..Make sure tabs at the bottom are in the right place.
Put plate on back. If the the holes dont line up turn the reset switch around and then they will line up.
Make sure no wires can get pinched.
Install screws and put rubber boot back on reset switch.

Do the same procedure for the tach. It goes in the right hole of the bracket.

Put indicator light panel back on. Look at the back of the plugs and you will be able to tell which way match up the lights with the signals(L,R), oil(O), highbeams (H). Notice the color pattern..this is the right way. Install the s screws,

Reverse this order to install.

Finished product.

Bracket bolts get tightened to 12-18ft/lbs.
Make sure you replace the zip ties that you cut earlier.

This was extremely easy. Almost a plug and play system.
I doubt I messed it up but I wont be 100% sure until I get the motor back together to try it out.
The tach is a HD one.

Once again, that's AWESOME man. I've been thinking about adding a tach to my 883L. Would it be too much to ask for a picture from the front of the bike. I'm a bit concerned about how it will look from that angle. And since I've discovered there is a rev limiter, I'm not as concerned about pushing the engine too hard.

Nonetheless, I think ALL manual transmission vehicles should have a tach. I'm not really sure why they are needed on most of the automatic tranny cages these days...but that's another discussion.

I've been jonesing for that tach setup.

It drives me nuts not knowing exactly how fast the engine is turning.

C.Jay..Its a 04 Wrangler. Its the wifes and I am not allowed to go near it or drive it unless it needs gas or the oil changed. I made one little comment after she got it about taking it off road and I got officialy banned. Almost had her convinced to take it to a off road park once. But the next morning she sobered up and saw pics of rolled and stuck Jeeps on the off road web site and put the brakes on that idea real fast.

I had a 92 that I got new right after the lil' lady and I were married, I have been looking at new ones this winter, kinda like the new four door, but it kinda defeats the purpose of the original design.

Conversion to 1250 is complete and the tach works beautiful. No problems at all.

Thanks for the extra pic!

My Sporty also shares a garage with my 2000 Jeep Wrangler Saraha. Although, I have to admit..the gas that's in the tank of my Jeep was bought a couple of days before I bought the Harley. Bought the bike on April 1st....(yeah I've heard all the comments about buying a bike on April fools day!!!!)

Jeep has only been driven about 100 miles since I got the bike.
