So I was riding my '05 sportster 883 today and opening it up a more than usual on some back roads...but still have not hit the rev limiter .

Question is for those of you that have actually hit the rev limiter, what happens, is it very noticable?...I am assuming it is, I know in cars that I have had in the past it was very clear by the sound of the engine and feeling a real loss of power.

 

I hit it once in my 06 sporty and the first time it happens it scares the **** out of you. Thought for a second I blew up the motor, then it dawned on me.....
I hit it right before I shifted into third. You will know when it happens....

 

Yep, Hit it around 135-140mph or so last year on my 48 racing a Bmw. Motor starts cutting out and such! Total lose of power until you slow down! I was hauling down the highway and then the motor started to spit and sputter until I slowed down to 90. I've topped it out in lower gears also drag racing friends and over reving it! Same thing, she spits and sputters like it's out of gas.

 

Change 06 to 04 and that's word for word how it went for me. merging into traffic, gunned and downshifted.

Pretty much what I imagine an angry honey badger fighting against a wall is like.

 

DaveH883...little off topic, but I was checking out your sig pic and noticed your headlight. Is that the stock headlight? It looks like it extends out farther than mine. Do you have the burly shocks on there? If so does the tire rub on anything. I have a 2005 and was just curious. Thanks

 

Yup, few times Usually in first or sometimes second. I think on the on ramp to freeway mostly. Sometimes they're down hill and I reach my rev limit faster than expected.

Need to invest in a tach

 

I've hit it so many times it's a good thing it's there or my motor would be in pieces by now.

I hit it not even 2 miles into leaving the dealer when I got mine, just had to know what it was like.

 

I've only hot the rev limited in 5th on the hwy... It sucks when it just cuts the power
