Hey all! Im new here..finally decided to register.. I had a 402 tire on my 07 Street Glide when I bought it with 12k miles.. tire was original.. I replaced it with a 404 because the shop had it in stock..and this was before I knew anything about the difference.. That 404 lasted me about 4 months and 3500 miles before it was scary slick..... I took it back to them, they said that was the wrong tire...very light duty, even to light duty for a Sportster.. The 402 is the only way to go on any cruiser or touring bike.. Proven!!

Default Dunlop D404 tire popped at 125kph (70mph)

my wife and i were riding home on the highway 2 weeks ago when the rear tire on my HD Heritage Classic popped doing 70mph. The rear rim of the bike immediately contacted the road surface sending the rear end careening 2 feet to one side and then 4 feet back the other way while I frantically counter-steered to bring the front wheel back inline with the rear which seemed to work as we did not lay the bike down and slowly rumbled to a stop by the side of the highway.
The next day i discovered the rear popped tire was a Dunlop D404 and Dunlop (now) says " do not use these on Harleys or other big bikes as they do not have belts inside them ".

Use a D401 or a D402 but never put on a D404 unless you want to try the counter-steering method at 70mph I described above.

The Dunlop 404 tires have a short tread life compared to the 401's. IMHO, I would go with the Metzler ME 880's or 888's. They are far superior tires to the 401 HD labeled tires and light years ahead of the 404's. The Metzlers aren't bothered by lines in the road or bridge grate surfaces the awful way Dunlops are. The only things between you and the pavement are your tires - don't skimp!
