Default Won't Idle/Runs Rich

So I've been hunting down this problem since I've got this bike about a week ago. It had a bad exhaust leak at the header, I fixed that. Then it gave me a P0118 code, from what I found out is most the time it's a connection issue. So I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Started the bike BOOM no engine light. So I went for a ride, about 30 miles in, it doesn't wanna idle and would die then not wanna start right back up. When it would run, it would blow black (meaning it's Rich) and the Engine light would come back on. As soon as I'd take off it would be fine after raping it and blowing all the the fuel out of the cylinders. I'm wondering if it's not the Engine Temp sensor (the P0118 code). Why would it go on and off though?

Is there anyway to clear the code and history without taking it to a dealer?

do a compression check , sometimes if the leak is real close to the head,
cold air can get in on shutdown and could warp/ruin seat of a valve...compression will tell you .

been there /done that

Popping or "blow back" through the intake is generally a sign of a LEAN condition, not RICH.

Not if its so rich its fouling plugs, and if it had blow by it would blow white smoke not black. Correct?

Oops, misread your blow black for "blow back" like from intake.

I think if you disconnect battery and wait 15-20 minutes, the codes will clear. At least they do on my truck. I think I read about some procedure to do it on this site somewhere. Can't really help with the codes, since I've got an old one with minimal electronics.

Good luck.

I've found the way to test that sensor, I'm kinda hoping it's bad so I know what it takes to fix her.

If you think it's running rich, check the plugs to see if they're fouled. Clear up the easy stuff and if problem continues then work on figuring out what's causing the code.

I already have put new plugs in it, I just went and tested the sensor. It works like it should, I guess what I should of done is ride it and got it HOT and checked it when it likes to screw up. I'm almost half tempted to call the local MoCo dealer and play stupid.

Well I said screw it and changed the Engine Temp Sensor out, still doesn't run right. I can't think what it could be! I also can not delete that code from the speedo, anyone else run into that problem before?
