The Gas Tank (peanut?)

The Gas Tank (peanut?)
I have a 3.3 gallon gas tank. Now my question is does it actually hold 3.3 gallons? The tank does stop gas going into it at a certain point (there is a name for this thing) ((to keep it from overfilling))). When I first got the bike I'd fill the gas tank right when the gas light went on. And i'd squeeze 1.5 gallons of gas in there before it would be full (stoped). So at first i was thinking thats kinda weird. Gas tank light goes on when its at 1.8 gallons of gas left. Ok whatever. So lately i've been getting testy with it. I'l go a little longer with the gas light on before filling up, everytime nothing more then 2 gallons would go into it. I'd try looking down into the tank right before filling up, but it gets too dark to see in there. Today i decided that sense I'd get about 75miles on (1.5 - 1.8 gallons). Then if the tank really holds 3.3 gallons then i should be able to crank out atleast 120 miles before a fill-up; so i'l ignore the gas light and go by the miles guage. So i was cruising along today and right at about 80 miles i start lugging as i pick up speed from a stop. That was my sign that the thing was almost empty on gas. so i get to the gas station and what do you know only 2 gallons fits in the tank, still...
Not really that big of a deal, but what the's the point of saying its a 3.3 gallon gas tank if it really on fits 2 in it? Or is there something just wrong with my tank/bike?

Good point, but i've never really measured how much has gone into mine. Maybe I should strap a plastic gas tank with 3.3 gallons to the back and ride till i'm empty, then empty the plastic tank to see if the peanut will actually take it all! Nah...i'm sure there are better ways to measure it. lol
BTW, welcome to the forums, I see you have 3 posts and are fairly new.

BTW,
If you want your picture imbedded in your signature, you will need to cut the old [IMG] tags and enter [IMG] tags instead. I made it for you and it's the correct code to enter into your signature files, so copy and paste it in and it'll fix the broken link at the bottom of your signature. Cheers!

Should hold the 3.3advertised, mine does on my 2000 XL1200C. Do you have a reserve??? If so just run till it begins to miss, being sure your within 30 miles of a station, then fill with how much?I always set the trip odometer with fill up and between 100 and 150 mi. my peanut tank takes 2.5 to 3 gallons. Are you sure your topping out the tank? Is the fuel indicator accurate and can it be adjusted? Sounds like it just come on to soon.

If your bike is needing the reserve at 80 miles, something is wrong - most likely with the petcock. My 2005 XL1200R has the 3.3 gallon tank and I go about 120 miles before needing reserve.
When you say, "...And i'd squeeze 1.5 gallons of gas in there before it would be full (stoped)" I get the sense you are not really filling your tank. It sounds to me like you are stopping the flow of gas into it when the pressure in the hose stops the flow of gas. When filling up, you need to pull the gas nozzle almost out of the tank, hold the rubber boot high on the nozzle, and continue putting gas in the tank until the level reaches the bottom of the tank's vent tube. At that point, your tank is full.

You say, "...Should hold the 3.3advertised, mine does on my 2000 XL1200C". If you have the XL1200C and haven't swapped tanks your capacityshould be5 gallons. Is this just a typo on your part?

Sounds like maybe you're not completely filling up the tank. To get the full 3.3 gallons in the tank, you'll have to hold the gas nozzle up above the tank, and CAREFULLY top off the tank. I have the 3.3 gallon tank, I usually fill up just after I have to switch to reserve ( I don't have a fuel light, it's a carb bike). Depending on just how far I go after switching to reserve, I usually pump about 2.6 gallons to fill it up. That's right in line with the listed capacity for an 06 model. The listed capacity is 3.3 gallons, with .8 gallons in the reserve. Therefore, you would expect to hit the reserve at 2.5 gallons.
