Default 94 1200 best power mods?

I'm currently working on paying off a 1200 sportster and I'm trying to put together my performance mods now...wondering what this engine likes for power gains? Thanks - Nate

Air Cleaner and exhaust are most common, next is cams and a change in compression, along with a different ignition, preferable something that can be adjusted for timing. As for how much more power, depends on how much do you really want to spend?

+1.........Good advice.

And bottom line on power is.....How much you want to spend. Do you have a budget in mind or dollar amount?

I guess for "bolt on" performance I would like to keep it around 1000. I think I could probably get there for an air cleaner pipes and ignition?

The bike is currently stock with drag pipes but I'm hearing they should come off as they rob power from a stock motor? I would love V&H short shots eventually

The best bang for the buck in your case would be a Screaming Eagle air cleaner, Cycle Shack slipon mufflers on stock head pipes w/the crossover. The drag pipes suck for anything other than max HP in a very narrow RPM range, and then, I'm assuming every other component has been matched to that RPM range.

For good street cams, the SE .536 cams are a good choice, as are the Andrews N4s.

I wouldn't swap the ignition, though you may need to slightly retard the initial timing (rotate the module to the left, using a dial-back timing light) w/the new tune.

I'd suggest that at first, you get the pipes and A/C - tune the carb for that, and see where you are. You should be able to accomplish those updates for less than $500.00.

If you want more, I'd strongly suggest saving your $$ until you can afford to get a set of decently worked XB heads, and then choose a cam profile/ignition to optimize that combination (which will still work well w/the CV carb, SE A/C and stock head-pipes w/slipons).

Vance and hindes short shots are cheap 1 3/4" drag pipes with a fancy cover on them. You wouldn't gain anything. Put a bolt threw the rear of the drag pipe, they will run better than factory exhaust.

If you can get real pipes that work, don't. This is a crutch, that will help tame the symptoms that the inherent problems w/reversion and drag pipes present, but, it's not a proper fix.

The best performance pipe is a 2:1 - but, new, they're a bit expensive. You can get close to 2:1 performance w/stock head pipes and decent slipon mufflers.

There's probably more written about exhaust technology than you want to take the time to read, but, here's a couple accurate, simply presented articles that oughta help you understand the concepts:
