Default Hammer 1250 kits (small fin) on sale for $540!

Thought I'd spread the word for anyone thinking of a 1250 conversion. Hammer Performance, as of Feb 2013, is putting their small fin 1250 kits on sale for $540 (with XLF discount). The kits are on sale because they're the small fin version, but will fit rubber-mounts also. Aaron at Hammer Performance has not announced how long the sale will last.

EDIT: For rubber-mounts, lowest fin must be ground to fit the push rod tubes.

Here's a link to hammer's post on the XLForum:

'Questions...I see that these small fin kits are listed for use on the '86-'03 engines, but you're saying that they can be used on the '04 and up motors too? If so, why do they list them as '86-'03? Is that because that was the shape and style they used during these years, or? I see that Hammers '04 to present kits are ALL large fin and are still $699...'would like to see these go on sale as well, which may very well push me off the fence into bigbore land [fingers crossed]!

Hell of a deal....wish the 04 and up big fin version was on sale too. I would definitely order one but I am not interested in the older design. It is a great deal for those who have solid mount Sportys.

Check out some pics....the older design looks pretty good with newer heads.kind of retro. Just a thought

Yes the only difference is the fin design on the '86-03' models. Rubber-mounts use a larger fin design but all else is the same between the years.

NRHS has been using the small fin Axtell cylinders for years, but here's what Hammer has to say about the small fin design:

Do you have an '04 or newer? This kit can be made to fit, but we don't recommend it as you'll reduce the cooling capability of your motor. We highly recommend our large fin kit instead. If you want to do it though, it can be done, you'll just have to machine or grind on the fins to get it to clear the pushod bases. Here's an example of how a small fin kit looks under a 2004 or newer large fin head:
That is the first I've ever heard of the need to grind the fins???

Madnss, do you know anything about the need to grind the fins? Isn't it the same design that NRHS uses?

EDIT: For rubber-mounts, lowest fin must be ground to fit the push rod tubes.

S&S sell a 1200 kit that is also small fin, but fits later large fin engines. So they must be OK! All down to personal preference, although I must admit I wouldn't want to start grinding away new parts myself.

I don't think it is much grinding at all.

OK, thanks for the info. Looks like Hammer recommends against the small fins due to less surface area/cooling ability. Looks like I'll wait.

Hey, did you ever get your beer back?

If it were for the '04+ bikes (no grinding needed), I'd jump on it in a heartbeat.

I think you guys are over reacting about the grinding and cooling on these jugs. You prob can't tell the difference in cooling by very much. It's not like your bike is going to run super hot. They work just fine on mild to wild builds.
