Any ideas where this goes?-090320131000.jpg
Hi Guys,
I'm new around here and I have a problem I hope someone out there can solve.
I'm rebuilding/restoring a 1978 Sportster XL1000 AMF Anniversary bike and I've no idea where this bit (see attachment) fits. I think it's an oil vent pipe (it's 1/8 inch bore rubber tube), but I can't find it in any parts list or service manual that I've been able to look at. It looks like the one that fits on the top of the a gearbox casing but there is no hole for it on my engine. It is definitely part of this bike, but I can't find a place for it anywhere.
If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks for looking
Uncripnick.

Not certain, but it could be the overflow pipe from the carburettor. It fits on the float bowl and directs excess fuel away from the engine.

Looks like it might be a vent line for a rear drum brake?

A clue is in that threaded fitting. There can't be many places it will go! The pipe that mreed points out looks like a metal pipe. Yours certainly doesn't look like a carb pipe, the thread looks too big. If you remove the rubber pipe what does the rest of the threaded fitting look like? Could be it is a chopped down version of mreed's pipe, with a bit of hose pushed on it.

No starter on your right? Just point of reference. Here's another pic. It comes up from behind rear cylinder to allow for ventilation. Not sure if that's what you've got, but that was the first thing that came to mind for me.

Smile Mystery solved.

Hi Guys,
sorry it's taken my so long to reply but I been very busy. Thanks very much for all your ideas and suggestions regarding my problem. I read and considered them all for quite a while and then went and had another long look at the bike, and then it finally hit me (not the bike-the answer!).
On this bike the Oil Tank support bracket, mounted on top of the gearbox casing was held on by two 9/16 bolts, but that was wrong. It should have been a 9/16 bolt in one hole and the vent screw in the other hole. The vent screw performs two functions, holding down the support bracket AND venting the gearbox. Very sensible design! The moulded bend in the rubber tube routes the tube over the starter solenoid and then down to the road.
Now I can get on and finish the job.
Thanks again for all your help, I think you all deserve a cigar!
Regards,
Uncripnick.
