A Yellow Sportster 48 180mm rear
Hi all
Just have finished 'winter makeover' as you call it here of my sporty 48. Most of the mods are quite common to the forum and I really appreciate many of you for inspiration and good examples of bike customization. I feel that 180mm rear conversion is quite popular question here, that's why I decided to share my experience on that topic.
So this is 180mm metz tire installed into the stock fork. Rim is 16x5 custom made by hdwheels. It was nearly bolt on installation, just had to grind some metal from inside of the left strut and reverse fender bolts. Clearance is pretty tight, .2" between left strut and wheel and .15" from tire to belt and there is no room to increase that, but is seems enough as I rode several dozens of miles with this setup and it seems nothing touches anything.
I also cut fender about 1" to ensure better view of the tire from behind, at the same time keeping stock look.
When it comes to handing and performance, I have noticed no significant changes. Maybe a little bit softer/comfortable in the rear due to bigger tire.
When it comes to style, it is up to you to judge. I am fully satisfied as I wanted to keep original 48 style and look but highlight some details I like about 48.
And for those who is intrested, I am 33 from Moscow Russia and this is my first bike ever. You can also check out our ridiculously big licence plates)
