I used a chain conversion from Led Sled on an 08. Super easy.

LedSled kit is ok, but they use too small sprockets which tend to let the large o-ring chains gnaw on the passenger footpeg mount frame bosses. You can do better/cheaper with PBI sprockets...use a 2073 series drive sprocket and a 277 series trans sprocket (25T). You will also need a 1/4" spacer for the drive sprocket. (LedSled uses a dished drive sprocket)

I remember the old chain bikes in the early 80s. They were noisy, required much more maintenance than driveshafts or belt drives. I actually loved the bikes with drive shafts way back when.

My bike just hit the 25k miles mark, and my belt/rear pulley are due to be changed at the next service, rear pulley being heavily pitted.

I fell of my chair when I saw the prices for a belt kit, so I decided to go the chain route. The parts involved are cheaper, and the next overhaul will be a lot easier to do...

If your belt is still working, leave it as it is! These things are known to do 100k miles. Don't be put off by what it all looks like until it is truly awful! You will need several sets of chain/sprockets for every belt/pulley, so things level out.

Belts are the new chains!

That's what I've read or been told, indeed.

My problem is that this Sportster is my daily driver, I don't want to be left stranded in the middle of nowhere. My indy told me it should be replaced at the next service, he knows how I ride (90% on the highway at 75 MPH).

I'll try to take some pics of the belt & pulley

Hi there, just done this on my 09 iron, the hardest part for me was getting the front sprocket off to get the new one on, ended up buying an impact driver in the end,
I love the look of the chain but it is more messy, flick belt lube over the frame and exhaust, more so after I've just clean it and relubed it.
Would I go back to a clean belt? NO WAY!
