I bough a wiring harness from the Bruce Lindsay company for an 89 sportster i am wiring for a friend. I found out that the bike has been worked on by several people and the original wiring was changed. Anyone know where i can get a good schematic or pic of the original harness so i can install it correctly. Thanks in advance.

Can you get a service manual? I have a 1991, but they changed the wiring substantially in 1991 as far as the turn signals, stator/rotor, and maybe the ignition system too. I doubt the wiring is similar.

the owner is not wanting to buy the book. I figured the harness would come with a diagram but this thing has been so hacked i am just trying to get an idea what goes where. The harness has alot more wires than the bike. Thanks for the reply

 

Try over on xlforum.net, there a lot of folks with restoration/modification wiring experience that could help figure out the critical wires you need for an older Sportster. I can scan and send you my '91 diagram, but it's in black/white and microscopic to read.
